A mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur was demolished by local authorities on Friday, citing illegal construction. Officials said the structure was built without any approved map or proper permissions. They added that prior notice had been issued, but construction continued regardless.
Subodh Kumar, a district official, stated that action was taken under standard anti-encroachment procedures. “The mosque was being built without clearance. A notice was served, yet the work continued, so it was removed. We will act against all unauthorised structures,” he said.
However, the demolition has drawn political heat. Saharanpur’s Congress MP Imran Masood strongly objected to the move, calling it unlawful and insensitive. He claimed the mosque was on private land and the administration had been informed. “No one was given even 15 days to respond. What village map approval are they talking about?” he said.
Masood further alleged that no proper hearing or procedural fairness was ensured. “We didn't resist on ground only because we feared being shot. We’ll now fight it in court,” he said.
